Sydney’s Yum-Cha is a conceptual documentatry series developed as my final project for my Honours degree in Visual Communications at the University of Technology, Sydney.
Told by members of the Chinese migrant community, yum-cha is a gathering for a joyous meal synonymous for family. It’s consistently messy and chaotic. Trolleys rolling with steaming bamboo baskets, paper dockets stained with tea and rumbling lazy-susans, kids fighting for the last siu-mai.
A pilot episode was developed, interviews with managers, staff and long-time patrons tells the history and ubiquity of yum-cha in Sydney, tea etiquette and what makes yum-cha in Sydney so special.
